Black and white images are sometimes more stunning, eye-catching, and powerful than color photos. This is one example. The lighting on the dog is simply better (you can notice how about 50% of he/she is lit) in black and white than it would've been in color.

The composition follows the rule of thirds pretty nicely. There's no wasted space in this picture. Every item in the photo (pillow, chair, dog) tells a part of the story. The dog (and his/her) smile suggests man's best friend. The pillow and the chair suggest that this picture was set in a nice warm home.
